They came out with a new bar a few years later that had multiple holes and this solved the problem somewhat. After I saw an iTube video on using the Moccamaster this is no longer an issue.
As soon as the water starts coming out of the holes remove the lid and stir the grounds vigorously until they are completely wet and there is a slight froth on top. Not too hard so as to rip the filter. A 10-15 second stir is all that is needed.
